GREAT EXCITEMENT AT MABS CANCER SUPPORT GROUP AS WE LAUNCH OUR 2012 CALENDAR

Jacqueline Phillips MBE, President of MABS Cancer Support Group, launched the MABS 2012 calendar at Cafe Del Mar, Rada de Moraira on Wednesday, 16th November 2011.
Jacqui spoke briefly about how MABS came to be and how the Group assists those undergoing treatment for cancer in so many ways today, twelve years on.
She told over 40 people gathering for lunch:
“The 2012 Calendar has been designed differently to previous years and it features excellent and unique photographs of Spain by our own Nik Nickerson. With room for each day’s appointments, you will find the main Spanish and UK holidays are listed along with contact phone numbers for all four MABS Branches and all MABS Area Offices, MABS Charity support shops and MABS therapy centres. More than just a calendar…… this is a great resource for everyone.”
Jacqui went on to tell the group that the Calendars will be on sale at all branches of Iceland for the next few weeks at a cost of three euros and she thanked Iceland for their help with this distribution. Jacqui also thanked the other sponsors, SR Print and Design, Securistore, Female Focus, Cooper Removals, Telitec Communications and Heat FM.
Calendars will also be available for sale at the MABS Sol Park Centre, all MABS charity shops and it can also be ordered by emailing MABS through www.mabscancersupport.org.
Jacqui thanked Pam Small of MABS and Sherry from Café del Mar for organising the event at which 500 euros was raised from a raffle and calendar sales. This was a great achievement and thanks go to everyone who contributed towards the day.

Note for editors: As MABS grows we are constantly in need of more volunteers. If you think your readers or listeners may have time on their hands; please think of ways you could help us to encourage them to join us. Thank you. There are now four main branches and several area offices of the charity in many geographical areas from Valencia to Gibraltar. All need their Volunteers: Supporters, Drivers, Translators and, indeed, people who can ‘just be a buddy’ who’ll pop in for a cuppa, do a bit of shopping or just be there to listen. MABS Cancer Support Group offers support and kindness to cancer patients. The support group was started in 1999 by Jacqui Phillips MBE along with others who had been affected by cancer but had no one in Spain to turn to for advice and support. Together they decided that those who don’t speak Spanish should not have to worry -  like they’d had to - about translation between themselves and medical staff, the lack of technical information about their cancer, transportation to and from hospital appointments and support for family and friends. The ladies were firmly determined to address all these things, and more, for cancer patients in the future. Today MABS helps all nationalities, including Spanish speaking residents. MABS Cancer Support Group is registered charity number 7261.

TWO WELL KNOWN CHARITIES SHARE THE GIVING

Both MABS Cancer Support Group and Jalon Valley HELP are known for their
giving and caring.

This week MABS was fortunate to share the fundraiser that Jalon Valley HELP put on
during their PINK WEEK earlier this month.

Jalon Valley Help President, Rhonda Ryan, presented a cheque for 1,052 euros to
MABS President, Jacquelyne Phillips MBE, at the MABS get together at MABS Centre
for Therapy in Sol Park, Javea.

As Rhonda, still pretty in pink, explained

“During our ‘Pink Week” at the beginning of October we raised over 2000 euros
from our coffee morning and in our Charity shops. We decided that 50% should go
to MABS and 50% should go to Aspanion, the cancer care centre for children at
Lafé Hospital in Valencia.
For those who don’t know of Lafé Hospital, it’s like Spain’s equivalent of the UK’s
Great Ormond Street and they have a big department researching children’s
cancers”.

Jacqui Phillips expressed the thanks of the MABS Cancer Support Group to
Rhonda and to everyone at Jalon Valley HELP for their generosity and
thoughtfulness by saying:

“You can be assured that this money will make a huge difference to what we can do
in the Jalon Valley area and throughout the Costa Blanca.”

Its a crazy world.............

MABS CANCER SUPPORT GROUP RECEIVES AMAZING GIFTS!

The MABS Sol Park Centre opened in June 2009 to provide cancer patients, their families, carers and friends with emotional and practical support such as confidential counselling by qualified counsellors, and complementary treatments and therapies.

On September 27th, over 60 people gathered to see three organisations make presentations to the Group.

The Costa Blanca Business Association presented a lymph control laser machine to MABS President, Jacquelyne Phillips MBE, for use by MABS therapists at the Centre.

CBBA´s President, Sr Jesus Francisco Negrillo said

“We are delighted that our fundraising so far has been able to pay for this   lymph control laser machine, and we hope that it will bring many benefits to the patients helped by MABS. So far this year the CBBA members have taken part in the Race for Life in April, and have held a rastro stall in Pedregeur in May, raising a total of over €2500 to buy this much needed equipment.  On behalf of the Costa Blanca Business Association, and in memory of our member and MABS Vice President, Frances Sawyer, we are pleased to present this equipment to MABS.”

Jalon & Orba Lions presented a wonderful storage cabinet and vertical blinds, both for the treatment centre.
Their President, Anna Cameron said “We always enjoy the fundraising we do for MABS and we know that the things we provide are very necessary to the group”.

Moraira and Teulada Lions presented six comfortable commode armchairs and six ripple mattresses.
Their President, Dr Nico Dekkers, said “It’s a thank you for the work you have done and will do in the future for our members”.

All three of the organisations present have worked hard to fund-raise for MABS and Mrs Phillips recognised them for their tireless work at today’s event and would like to again, publicly, say “Thank you!”

MABS GATHERS AT EL CISNE

On Friday, several charities were hosted at the El Cisne Rastro in Benidorm and MABS Cancer Support Group made a happy day of it, selling contributed items and lots of books.
People are very generous in giving these items for sale and we thank them all, as well as our hosts at El Cisne and our many customers.

MABS LA MARINA DREAMS TEAM

During August and September, management, staff and customers at Bar Dreams on La Marina, have generously made two donations totaling 340 euros to MABS Cancer Support Group.
On September 14th, Bob Clayton - MABS Area Coordinator for the La Marina Branch – presented two ‘Certificates of Appreciation’ to Pam, her staff, and the team of fundraisers from Dreams Bar to say thank you for their efforts. There was special recognition of the 190 euro donation in memory of the late Mrs. Marguerite Elliott.
Fundraising is an important part of the work done by volunteers to keep the work of the Cancer Support Group moving ahead.
“Without people like our friends at Bar Dreams, we would not be able to continue our support work; we are very grateful t them all” said Bob last week.

Great Sailing Day for MABS

A glorious day greeted members of the Sailing Association Mar Menor (SAMM) for the first annual SAMM Race for MABS. Competitors came from all around to take part in the dinghy and cruiser classes. A fair wind meant a good day's sailing and MABS volunteers turned out to support the event.

Ole receives his cup from Lyn
The Class 1 Race (Cruisers) was won by Norwegian Ole Jan Midttun, in his beautiful Benateau First 44.7 "Apex". In second place was Derek English in the Stryder Club catamaran "Hamoor". In third place was Ian Robinson in the Benateau Ocianis 36 "Lottie".

Lyn presents the Dinghie Cup
The Class 2 Race (Dinghies). The winner was Alan Hillman in a Laser Bahia. Second was Brian Murray sailing the Weta 14 Trimaran. In third place were Ingo Wilson and Vernon O’Byrne sailing the Laser 2000 “Shoestring Tres”.

MABS would like to thank everyone involved with the race from the helms and their crews, Bob Miles and the 2 safety boat crews, the committee boat, Moody 30 “Rosie” owned by Huw and Margaret Jones, and all the other people within SAMM who made the day such a success.

Crews were sponsored by friends and family, raising over 2500 Euros and exceeding their target in this inaugural race. "We're extremely grateful to all SAMM members who helped organise and take part in the race and raising such a magnificent sum." said MABS Director, Lyn Baines. "We've thoroughly enjoyed working alongside SAMM and look forward to next year's race."

Close Shave for MABS

When MABS Murcia volunteer, Val Vickery, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer it was a huge shock for her and hubby, Malcolm. As key members of the MABS team, they have raised a great deal of money with the weekly MABS book sale outside The Arches in Los Alcázares. Needless to say, fellow MABS volunteers rallied round and they have received lots of support whilst Val has undergone a major operation and now, during her ongoing chemotherapy treatment.

Val continues to help Malcolm on the bookstall each week “It keeps me focused” she says “and the summer is always such a busy time for us.” They work very much as a team and are well known to residents and holidaymakers in Los Alcázares. They both knew that, with an aggressive course of chemotherapy, Val would quickly lose her hair and Malcolm wanted to do something to make sure that she didn’t feel out of place when it happened. He came up with the idea of having his own head shaved to keep her company and then the idea began to snowball.

When The Arches owner, Ali, heard about it, she was happy to help Malcolm make it a fundraising event for MABS. Word soon spread and MABS supporter, Suzy G, offered to entertain everyone at the event. The news reached MABS sponsors, Iceland Overseas in San Javier, and Martin Lawrence of Customer Services immediately volunteered to join Malcolm and have his head shaved too. “This is turning into quite an event and I am delighted that Suzy and Martin are joining me” commented Malcolm.

The sponsored head shave will take place at The Arches in Los Alcázares on Thursday, 15 September (7.30 pm for an 8.00 pm start) and tickets are available at The Arches for just 5 € each, which includes a buffet. If you would like to sponsor Malcolm and Martin, or if you would like tickets, please call Malcolm on 968 135 346 or email info@mabsmurcia.com

Some Like It Hot!

On Monday, 15th August, with the temperature above 30° C, most people were thinking of ways to stay cool: cold drinks, a dip in the pool, a cool shower, or a lovely, refreshing swim in the sea.  Not so for Terry Rooke, who decided to do something completely different to help other people affected by cancer; he was going to have his legs waxed, just like Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon did in that famous film ‘Some Like It Hot’.

These ‘challenges’ are often thrown down after a few drinks for a bet, but not so for Terry, who had the full backing of his partner, Sue, to give him encouragement. The decision was made in the cold light of day without a drop of alcohol in sight: Terry was having his legs waxed to raise money for MABS Cancer Support Group in Mazarrón. Fully qualified beauty therapist, Vivienne O’Neill, from the Fuchsia Beauty Clinic, was there to introduce Terry to the wonders of waxing, giving her time for free. As Terry laid smiling on the bed, Vivienne carefully smoothed wax on his legs. As she smoothed on the first strip and swiftly whipped it off, Terry’s smile seemed to turn to a grimace, but he remained undeterred until both legs had been thoroughly de-fuzzed. Sponsored by friends and relatives, Terry’s endurance paid off, raising the princely sum of 150 € for MABS Mazarrón. “I’m sure Terry will agree that waxing isn’t for wimps and we’re really grateful that he was brave enough to raise such a handsome sum for us in this whacky way.” commented MABS Director, Lyn Baines. “We rely totally on donations and fundraising events like this one, so please get in touch with us if you have an idea, no matter how crazy it may be!”

Caribbean Comes to Camposol!

Getting on down with Bob 'Barrington' Marley

Dancing Caribbean Style
More than 220 people enjoyed the songs of Bob Marley, limbo dancing and Caribbean capers with Barrington at the MABS Caribbean Night fundraiser. “It was so popular that we sold out of tickets on the first day of sale” commented Sue Jacob, MABS Fundraising Co-ordinator. Sue had been rushed into hospital with acute appendicitis just a week before, but the fundraising team made sure that everything was on schedule for the event. Undeterred by her recent major operation, Sue arrived in a wheelchair (decorated a la Caribbean, of course) to oversee the night’s festivities.

Charlotte Lends a Hand
MABS fundraisers worked hard to give everyone a true flavour of the Caribbean with some great decorations, including two palm trees, made especially for the event. Charlotte, granddaughter of Totana Shop Manager, Ann Vinall, made the tea-light jars in bright, Day-Glo colours, which added to the whole evening’s atmosphere, and she proved to be a valuable member of the event team.

To complete the theme, and despite temperatures in the high 30’s, Barrington sported his Bob Marley dreadlocks like a true professional to entertain the crowd, many of whom had also dressed for the occasion in colourful outfits. Fired up by the atmosphere, guests joined Barrington’s Caribbean dancing sessions and there was an impressive line-up of people willing to take on the challenge of the limbo dancing. Some excellent raffle prizes were donated by local businesses and ticket sales helped towards a final fundraising total of 1375 €. MABS Director, Lyn Baines, also attended the event “It’s been a fabulous night thanks to the Sue and her fundraising team.” she said “Everyone has worked so hard and I am very proud of them”.
Caribbean Fun

MABS Mazarrón is looking forward to its next big event, the Race for Life, on Sunday, 23 October. For entry and sponsorship forms visit the website: www.mabsmurcia.com or call 689 052 123

Viva Las Vegas!

The Viva Las Vegas Show was a complete sell-out, with not a ticket to be had anywhere. More than 190 people turned up at the Alandalus Restaurant, on the outskirts of Calasparra, last weekend to enjoy the show and help raise money for MABS Murcia NW.
Charles Prince and Christine King travelled from Mazarrón to entertain the audience with a feast of well known songs from Elvis Presley, Dusty Springfield and other famous stars who have appeared on the Las Vegas circuit. Adults and children alike were up dancing most of the night and the restaurant provided a range of tapas. The first prize for the raffle was kindly donated by La Mariposa Hotel, Gebas in the Sierra de Espuña – a quad biking session for 2, including lunch at the hotel. The raffle raised 506 € on the night, bringing the final total of funds for MABS to an incredible 1,156€.

MABS Co-ordinator, Cecilia Coulson, said “As people were leaving at the end of the night they were asking when the next show would be; in fact some people have asked to be on the waiting list for tickets. I have also received many emails saying what a fantastic night it was. As one lady remarked as she left: ‘Let’s have more’, so we will be organising another event very soon.” A new wheelchair has already been purchased with some of the funds raised.
