Country & Western for MABS

Lining Up for MABS
MABS Murcia North West branch recently brought a country and western feel to Calasparra at the Don Gomez IV Restaurant. Red Strokes and Christine King had travelled in from the coast to entertain MABS supporters with their country and western music; with people coming from all over the Murcia North West area to join in the fun. It didn’t take long before the line dancers were on their feet and dancing the ‘tush bush’ and other favourites, encouraging newcomers to have a go too. There was something for everyone, with some rock and roll also being played and a supper was provided during the interval.

The total raised from admissions and a raffle on the night was 915 € and Branch Co-ordinator, Cecilia Coulson, received lots of positive comments about the evening. “One lady said that this was the best night out that she had had since coming to live in Calasparra 4 years ago” said Cecilia “And we are so grateful to Red and Christine for taking the trouble to travel all this way to support us. Several people would like MABS to organise another, similar event which will hopefully take place in August. Thanks to everyone who sold tickets and to those who helped on the night. The evening would not have been such a success without their input.”

Iceland Overseas on Target for MABS Murcia

Manager, Russell Clements, and the Iceland Overseas San Javier team are very optimistic of achieving their fundraising target for MABS Murcia/Mar Menor. Handing over a further 1800 € this month, brings the total raised to date to 5494 €. “We set ourselves a target of 10,000 € when we nominated MABS as our charity at the beginning of the year,” commented Russell “And we’re extremely pleased that we have already gone past the half-way mark.”

This second tranche of funds was raised at the Easter Fun Day which was organised by Sorelle Fox and supported by several local businesses: AngloINFO, C&M Bouncy Castles, Sunshine FM Radio, Viva TV, and the Classic Car Club of Torrevieja displayed their vintage cars. MABS volunteers were on hand in the week leading up to the event to pack customers’ bags in return for a small donation. There were competitions and a fabulous array of raffle prizes, including a pair of Hugo Boss sunglasses from Specsavers worth 200 € – thanks to the lovely Kathleen who gathered all the prizes. A summer event is planned for July, which promises to be fun for everyone, so keep checking the press and the MABS website.

“Team Iceland is also in training for the MABS Race for Life on 13 November and we can’t wait to see what outfit Martin Lawrence will turn up in.” said Janet, MABS Fundraising Co-ordinator. “He dressed up as Miss Iceland at the Easter Fun Day, much to the amusement of Iceland’s customers.” Russell Clements is a serious badminton player and hopes to win the Spanish National title this year, so his training for the competitions will stand him in good stead for the 3 km route along the promenade at Los Alcázares.

Marina Alta Golf Society Charity Dinner Tuesday 24th May

Members and guests of the Marina Alta Golf Society assembled at Satari’s restaurant in Moraira to celebrate the previous days golf and to continue to raise money for MABS, the cancer support group.  Jacqui Phillips, President of MABS, was the guest of honour joining the table of Captain, Dave Reynolds, who had chosen the cancer support group as the charity for members to support this year.  Jacqui was hoping that the evening would raise the funds needed for the group who are dedicated to the support of all who are affected by cancer, whether patients or those close to them.  The MABS group have worked closely in the past with some members of the golf society and their wonderful support prompted Marina Alta Golf Society to work throughout 2010 – 2011 raising money to enable them to continue with the services they provide.

The evening itself started with the meal and, as last time, the quality of the food and service at Satari’s was excellent leaving the 62 members and guests very happy and content ready to raise money and enjoy the dancing and celebrations to follow.  Throughout the meal Captain Dave Reynolds passed among the assembled guests raising money through guessing the number of golf balls in the bag, paying to find the name of the ‘teddy’, fines for those who transgressed on the golf course…. and so on. The presentations for the golf quickly followed and then the auction started…. significant amounts of money were raised, compliments of Campbell La Mont Golf who offered at round for three golfers with instruction from Campbell at La Sella Golf Course which raised €400, a range finder donated by Charlie Miller, €150 and with other donations being snapped up we moved on to what we all hoped was the climax of the evening the auction of a Sunderland AFC football shirt donated by Jordan Henderson, nephew of member Dave Henderson, signed by the manager Steve Bruce , Chairman Niall Quinn and the first team squad.  Jordan is a successful young player who has been with the club since he was eight breaking through the ranks into the first team two years ago culminating in his first full England Cap in December of last year.  This item broke all past auction records and Charlie Miller secured the shirt with a successful bid of €700!  On the night an incredible €2248 was raised leaving a total of €3500 currently in the fund with still a month left to raise further funds.  Jacqui extended her warm thanks to all members and is looking forward to being able to use the funds raised in the coming year to further extend and develop the work the group do.

Well done and thanks to all members of Marina Alta Golf Society and to Satari’s restaurant.

THE COSTA BLANCA BUSINESS ASSOCIATION SUPPORT MABS

THANKS TO, AND FROM, THE COSTA BLANCA BUSINESS ASSOCIATION!

The Costa Blanca Business Association  (WWW.CBBA.ES) is a group of established businesses on the Northern Costa Blanca . Members represent a variety of services and trades and all work hard to ensure they offer excellent products, customer service and value for money.

As well as providing reliable services and promoting each other´s businesses, the CBBA also holds events throughout the year to raise money for local charities.

This year, their chosen charity is MABS  (http://www.mabscancersupport.org/) , chosen  in memory of Frances Sawyer, who was a founder member  of MABS  and also a member of the CBBA.

On Sunday 8 May the Association ran a fund raising stall at the Pedreguer  Rastro , and they would like to thank  everyone who donated items for sale, and of course those who came along and bought from the stall!

CBBA raised the grand total of €383.10, which will go towards the year’s goal: to purchase a substantial piece of equipment for use by MABS.

Thank you from everyone at MABS Cancer Support Group for all the hard work the CBBA are putting in this year, in memory of Francis and also in appreciation of the essential work that MABS is doing on the Costa Blanca.

Please note in your diary another CBBA fundraising event for MABS coming later in the year.

·         A Halloween Ball on Friday 28 October, to be held at the Oliva Nova Beach Resort. Further information will be published on CBBA and MABS websites, and in the local press.
If you are a business in Costa Blanca and may like to join the CBBA, please take a look at our  website, www.cbba.es or call Fiona Hulme on 675 039 952/email: fhulme@cobrosdirectos.com

“MABS RACE FOR LIFE” RAISES OVER NINE THOUSAND EUROS

Three hundred and fifty people took part in another successful  “MABS Race for Life” on April 3rd, 2011.
Between them they raised the amazing total of 9,367.68 euros, all of which will go to make the lives of those undergoing treatment for cancer more comfortable.
The five kilometre run started at the MABS Centre in Sol Park, Moraira, went to Moraira Town Hall and then returned to the Centre. The money raised is really important. It will go toward keeping the wonderful MABS Centre open for counselling and alternative treatments such as lymph drainage, Reiki therapy, Bach flower therapy and all the other wonderful treatments on offer.
MABS Cancer Support Group would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part:
·         The runners for their energy
·         Their individual sponsors for their financial contribution
·         Los Leones for providing the essential water
·         Iceland for those wonderful Energy Bars
·         Heat/Gold Radio for the live show on the day
·         Motive8 of Benitachell for planning the route and for getting everyone warmed up before the race
·         Teulada Town Hall for their support with the Civil Protection Unit on the roads
And last but definitely not least.......
·         Thanks go to those wonderful Marshalls for all their hard work along the route.
Now everyone is looking forward to 2012 and, with your help, we’ll raise the number of runners to a new record. Here are just a few of the 2011 entrants getting ready for the off!
